GAVI plans a big gathering at the World Economic Forum in Davos to highlight the critical role of technology in addressing Africa’s healthcare concerns. The breakfast event, co-hosted by the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy and Zipline, emphasized the need of using technology to empower governments and bridge information gaps throughout the continent.

Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, emphasized the immediate need for increased investments to connect people with crucial information. He stressed the importance of establishing ecosystems that foster innovation, citing Rwanda as a success story where innovative approaches effectively tackled multifaceted challenges.

A central theme of the discussion was the imperative for improved connectivity in various regions. Despite existing facilities, insufficient connectivity has hindered developmental potential. Tijani highlighted the necessity of focusing on building the required infrastructure to support these investments, ensuring they achieve their maximum impact.

The call for healthcare technology adoption coincided with the introduction of Zipline’s drone technology in Nigeria. Partnering with states like Kaduna, Cross River, and Bayelsa, Zipline’s drones aim to expedite the transportation of critical medical products, including vaccines, blood, and medications, to remote communities. The innovative use of drones has significantly reduced travel time, showcasing the potential to enhance healthcare quality, patient outcomes, and provider satisfaction.

Tijani commended investments like Zipline’s as crucial drivers of technological advancement for development. He emphasized that by investing in essential infrastructure and nurturing supportive ecosystems, Africa can effectively address its challenges and accelerate overall development.

The event, themed “Innovation at Scale: Ensuring Health and Prosperity,” brought together influential figures from the healthcare sector, academia, and governmental spheres. It served as a platform to underscore the immediate requirement for creative solutions aimed at enhancing healthcare accessibility and outcomes throughout the African continent.
