The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in Britain has released a comprehensive intelligence assessment, stating that ransomware attacks are anticipated to surge in both volume and impact over the next two years, owing to the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This warning comes with a high level of confidence from British intelligence analysts.

Key Points:

  1. AI-Enhanced Efficiency: The report indicates that AI will play a pivotal role in escalating ransomware attacks by enhancing their efficiency and stealth. AI technologies empower cybercriminals with more effective reconnaissance and social engineering capabilities, contributing to an increase in both the volume and impact of such attacks.
  2. Utilization of AI by Cyber Attackers: Cyber attackers are increasingly harnessing AI technologies to streamline their malicious activities. AI assists in various aspects of cyber attacks, including malware and exploit development, vulnerability research, and lateral movement. This makes existing hacking techniques more efficient and potent.
  3. Sophistication Limited to Best-Resourced Threat Actors: The report highlights that more sophisticated uses of AI for enhancing cyber operations are likely to be accessible primarily to well-resourced threat actors. Access to high-quality exploit data for training AI models, coupled with scaling barriers for automated targets, acts as a limiting factor for less sophisticated threat actors.

While AI provides powerful tools for cyber attackers, the need for access to specific data for training AI models poses a challenge. The report emphasizes the growing role of AI in cyber threats and the importance of considering cybersecurity risks specific to AI technologies in the design, development, deployment, and operation of AI systems.
