The implementation of Nigeria’s long-awaited Student Loan Scheme is on the horizon, with the Executive Secretary of the Student Loan Scheme Board, Akintunde Sawyer, announcing significant strides in the program’s development. Following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, Sawyer outlined key measures aimed at ensuring the efficient functioning of the scheme, with a focus on minimizing human intervention.

The move to implement the Student Loan Scheme, slated to commence later this year, aligns with President Tinubu’s commitment to revolutionize access to higher education and eradicate the challenges of incessant strikes in the educational sector.

President Tinubu had previously declared during the National Economic Summit 2023 in Abuja, “By January 2024, the new student loan must commence. To the future of our children and students, we are saying no more strikes.” This statement reiterated his dedication to providing a stable and reliable funding mechanism for students pursuing higher education.

The formalization of the Student Loan Scheme occurred on Nigeria’s Democracy Day, June 12, where President Tinubu, in fulfillment of a campaign promise, signed the student loan bill into law. The bill, originally sponsored by the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, who is now the Chief of Staff to the President, aims to facilitate easy access to higher education for indigent Nigerians through interest-free loans from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.

The funds earmarked for this program will be housed in the Ministry of Education, ensuring a transparent and accountable process. The Executive Secretary, Akintunde Sawyer, emphasized the board’s commitment to minimizing human intervention in the scheme, leveraging technological solutions to streamline processes and enhance the efficiency of the loan disbursement mechanism.
