The inauguration of Liberian President Joseph Boakai on Monday was abruptly halted when he experienced a “heat stroke” while delivering his acceptance speech.

Boakai, 79, took the oath of office but struggled mid-way through his speech. Security details assisted him off the podium, and the ceremony was adjourned. Reports suggest he suffered from heat exhaustion as temperatures exceeded 30C.

Boakai, declared president on November 20, 2023, defeated incumbent George Weah with 50.64% of the votes.

The inauguration ceremony in Monrovia was attended by foreign leaders, including Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo and VP Kashim Shettima.
