Former lawmaker Senator Shehu Sani has raised concerns about the state of security in Nigeria, emphasizing that security agencies in some neighboring African countries are more effective in discharging their duties compared to those within Nigeria’s borders.
In a post shared on his official Twitter handle on Thursday, Senator Sani questioned the apparent disparity in the security situations between Nigeria and countries like Benin Republic, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. He pondered why citizens in these neighboring nations are not experiencing the same level of kidnappings for ransom that has become prevalent in Nigeria.
The former Senator commended the professionalism of security operatives in Benin Republic, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, attributing the relative safety of their citizens to the diligence of their security forces.
Expressing deep concern over the escalating security crisis in Nigeria, Senator Sani highlighted the alarming trend where kidnapping has transformed into a lucrative business. He pointed out the dilemma faced by families of kidnapping victims, who, in the face of security agencies’ helplessness and hopelessness, often resort to paying ransoms to secure the release of their loved ones.
Sani’s post emphasized the dangerous cycle created by the payment of ransoms, stating that it not only puts the lives of hostages at risk when payment is withheld but also encourages more kidnappings when ransoms are paid.
