Boyi ThankGod, a Nigerian Army soldier attached to the 35 Artillery Brigade in Alamala, Abeokuta, Ogun State, reportedly shot himself in the head and died immediately. The incident occurred on Monday, January 15, the same day Nigeria observed Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
An Army source, who requested anonymity, revealed that the soldier took his own life while on standby duty. The source emphasized that an ongoing investigation is being conducted to determine the reasons behind the soldier’s tragic decision.
According to another source, the late soldier had previously expressed grievances about unpaid allowances and exhibited signs of depression before the unfortunate incident on Monday.
“The Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration, which took place on Monday, turned out to be a very unpleasant and sorrowful day for the 35 Artillery Brigade, as a young soldier identified as Boyi ThankGod, killed himself,” the source stated.
The soldier was assigned to the headquarters of the 35 Artillery Brigade in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and was detailed for barracks standby duty at the brigade headquarters. It is reported that he took his own life due to depression and low morale within the military system.
Friends of the late soldier mentioned that he had displayed a loss of interest in his army duties, complained about corruption within the military, and expressed low morale. The military police officers are currently conducting an investigation to ascertain the factors that led to the incident.
As of the time of reporting, the spokesperson for the brigade, Mohammed Goni, could not be reached for comment.
