Former Zamfara State lawmaker, Senator Kabiru Marafa, expressed commendation for President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to democracy by refraining from interference in the Supreme Court’s judgments on the 2023 governorship election. Marafa, who served as the Zamfara Coordinator for Tinubu’s Presidential Campaign Council, asserted that Tinubu’s non-interference, coupled with the judiciary’s integrity, has safeguarded Nigeria’s democratic principles.
In a statement, Marafa highlighted the significance of Tinubu’s decision, drawing parallels with historical instances where political interference led to the collapse of the Second Republic in 1983. He praised both Tinubu and the Supreme Court justices for upholding the expectations of Nigerians and allowing the will of the voters to prevail.
The former lawmaker emphasized that this move by Tinubu demonstrated a commitment to democratic values, preventing a recurrence of historical pitfalls. Marafa recalled a similar incident in the buildup to the 2019 general election, where the judiciary’s impartiality played a pivotal role in rectifying political injustices.
Marafa underscored the importance of allowing the judiciary to function independently, irrespective of political affiliations, to ensure the endurance of democracy in the country. He urged the governors whose elections were affirmed to govern with magnanimity and fairness. Specifically, he congratulated Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, encouraging collaboration for peace and security in the state.
The statement reflects Marafa’s belief in the judiciary’s role in upholding justice in political processes and his call for political actors to prioritize the principles of democracy for the country’s overall well-being.
