AS Roma has officially announced the departure of Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff from the Serie A club. Mourinho, who became the 60th coach of the Giallorossi in May 2021, achieved Europa Conference League glory within a year of his tenure. Despite guiding Roma to the Europa League final last year, where they lost on penalties to Sevilla, club owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin expressed gratitude for Mourinho’s passion and efforts.
In an official statement, the Friedkins stated, “We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club. We wish Jose and his assistants all the best in their future endeavors.”
The club confirmed Mourinho’s immediate departure, acknowledging his coaching staff’s exit as well. The 60-year-old Portuguese coach faced challenges this season, including emotional moments and a recent sending-off during a heated Coppa Italia quarter-final against Roma. The team’s subsequent 1-0 loss in the derby and a 3-1 defeat to AC Milan last Sunday have left Roma in a lowly ninth position in Serie A.
