Doma United’s Premier League title ambitions took a blow on Saturday afternoon as they were beaten 3-0 by Abia Warriors in their final away game of the first round.
A resolute Doma United’s defense held firm for 43 minutes before the dam broke, with Ifeanyi Anaemena converting a penalty to send the hosts into the break ahead. The second half brought little joy for Doma United. Seven minutes after the restart, Sunday Megwo doubled the Warriors’ lead with a composed finish past Kingdom Osayi.
Desperate for a comeback, Doma United made a double substitution, but their hopes were dashed in the 97th minute when Adejoh Ojonugwa added a third for Abia Warriors. The loss dropped Doma United down to fourth place on the table, leapfrogged by Plateau United (3rd) who overcame defending champions Enyimba 1-0 in another match.
Frustration was evident throughout the Doma United performance, with Kingdom Osayi, Haruna Aliyu, and Zaidu Mohammed all seeing yellow cards. The Gombe-based side will be keen to put this setback behind them and get back on track when they host Rivers United next Saturday at the Pantami Stadium.
