After years of delays, Dangote Refinery has commenced production, with the arrival of the sixth crude cargo from the Agbami field in the Niger Delta. The facility, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd), received a total of six million barrels of oil, fulfilling the required amount for operations.

Expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support, Aliko Dangote, the President of Dangote Group, highlighted the significance of the facility. The refinery has started producing diesel and aviation fuel, with products expected to hit the market upon receiving regulatory approvals.

Dangote emphasized the importance of this achievement for Nigeria, transforming it into a net exporter of fuels and marking a game-changing moment for the country. Nigeria, despite being Africa’s largest oil producer, has traditionally relied on imports for refined petrol due to dysfunctional refineries.

The Dangote Refinery, expected to generate significant quantities of diesel, kerosene, and jet fuel, will source crude from various Nigerian producers, including the state oil company. Nigerian oil firms have been mandated to provide crude to the Dangote refinery and five others, contributing to the country’s goal of reducing reliance on imported refined products. The Dangote refinery, with a capacity of 650,000 bpd, is set to receive the largest volume, further boosting Nigeria’s oil processing capabilities.
