THE Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has mapped out strategies to commence nationwide sensitization of students on personal security and protection. This is meant to mitigate the impact of attacks on educational institutions and abduction of students and teachers by terrorists.
Stakeholders are worried that the sporadic attacks on schools and kidnappings of students by terrorists have continued to have a chilling effect on education in the country. The phenomenon, the former Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has attributed to high number of out-of-school children because many parents were afraid to send their children to school while some schools were forced to close.
According to a report released by the Save the Children International (SCI), not fewer than 70 schools were attacked and 1,683 school children kidnapped across Nigeria between February 2014 and December 2022.
The project consultant, Mr Augustine Mamedu, presented the report titled; ‘Education under Attack: Review and Analysis of Attack on Schools, Teachers, and Learners from the Kidnapping of the Chibok Girls, Borno, Nigeria in 2014,’ to the public.
The report indicated that 184 learners were killed while 88 others were injured within the period.
It was reported that there had been similar attacks on educational institutions and kidnapping of students under the new administration of President Bola Tinubu.
