The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured stakeholders of its preparedness to conduct rerun elections in specified areas of Enugu State on February 3, following an order by the Appeal Court. The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, conveyed this commitment during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Enugu in anticipation of the upcoming polls.

The rerun elections are slated for Udenu/Igbo-Eze North Federal Constituency and Enugu South Urban State Constituency. Dr. Chukwu detailed that these elections would span 25 Registration Areas, encompassing 173 polling units. In the case of the Enugu South Urban State Constituency, a rerun is set for eight polling units with discrepancies.

The REC clarified that for Udenu/Igbo-eze North Federal Constituency, comprising Udenu and Igbo-eze North LGAs, elections would take place in 55 polling units in Udenu LGA and 110 polling units in Igbo-eze North LGA. Adhering to the court’s order specifying a 90-day timeframe for the rerun elections, INEC has scheduled February 3 for the exercise.

Dr. Chukwu emphasized the commission’s meticulous preparations, ensuring a smooth, inclusive, and hitch-free rerun election. He highlighted the presence of non-sensitive materials in various INEC offices across the concerned LGAs, further underscoring the significance of the stakeholders’ meeting in coordinating efforts for the upcoming electoral process.
