The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has announced its ambitious initiative to spearhead the transformation of Nigeria’s educational sector through the innovative application of data science. This groundbreaking move aims to enhance the quality assurance process in the country’s Technical Vocational Education and Training institutions.
According to a statement released by the Head of the Media Unit, Fatimah Abubakar, in Abuja on Tuesday, the full implementation of this digitalization process is scheduled for January 2024.
The success of the digitization initiative is attributed to the visionary leadership of NBTE’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris Bugaje, who invested in training NBTE staff in web development and artificial intelligence locally and internationally. This strategic move is crucial in managing the web platform effectively.
Mrs. Abubakar highlighted the contributions of the Federal Government, particularly the National Communication Commission, in providing and installing internet facilities across polytechnics in the six geopolitical zones. This initiative is a significant step toward the government’s commitment to the digitalization of education.
In 2023, Prof. Bugaje took a historic step by unbundling the HND Computer Science curriculum into four components: Software and Web Development, Cybersecurity and Data Protection, Artificial Intelligence, and Networking and Cloud Computing. This move, involving key players like Huawei and Cisco networking companies, aims to make Nigerian graduates more entrepreneurial.
The ongoing digitalization initiative envisions a future where technology plays a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of technical education in Nigeria. NBTE is embracing digital tools and platforms to revolutionize various aspects of its operations, ensuring seamless accreditation in a more transparent manner.
The digitalization process includes strategic objectives such as digitizing academic records, automating accreditation processes, and implementing e-learning platforms with a Learning Management System for effective monitoring.
Mrs. Abubakar quoted Prof. Bugaje, who emphasized that these measures are essential to keeping pace with the rapidly evolving demands of the modern world. They aim to provide students with cutting-edge education and equip them with the skills necessary to thrive in a digital era.
Prof. Bugaje expressed optimism about the transformative impact of the digitalization effort, stating, “Our commitment to digitalization is rooted in the belief that technology can significantly enhance the quality and accessibility of technical education. By embracing these advancements, we aim to create an ecosystem that fosters innovation, collaboration, and excellence.”
