Globacom Denies Owing MTN Interconnect Charges

Globacom Ltd, a prominent Nigerian Telecommunications Company, has vehemently refuted circulating reports suggesting outstanding interconnect charges owed to MTN.

A credible source within Globacom clarified to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the reported amount of N1.6 billion has been settled without any dispute.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) issued a public pre-disconnection notice on Monday, January 8, indicating that Glo failed to resolve its outstanding debts. The notice, posted on the NCC’s Twitter page, claimed that Glo lacked significant or justifiable reasons for the non-payment of interconnect charges.

Part of the notice stated: “All subscribers are requested to take notice that the commission has approved the partial disconnection of Globacom to MTN.”

According to the NCC, at the end of 10 days from January 8, 2024, subscribers of Globacom would no longer be able to make calls to MTN but could still receive calls.

Contrary to these claims, a Glo official insisted that proper fact-checking should have been conducted before concluding that the telco was in arrears to MTN.

“We are not owing MTN any interconnect charges,” the Glo official emphasized. The official further highlighted Glo’s pioneering role in introducing pay-per-second billing, challenging the monopoly of other foreign companies operating in Nigeria.

In light of these assertions, Glo deems the report against Nigeria’s fully indigenous telecommunications company as false.
