The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued an invitation to the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, regarding an alleged N585 million scandal. This development follows President Bola Tinubu’s immediate suspension of Edu on January 8, 2024.
An EFCC operative, confirming the summons, revealed that the anti-graft agency had recommended Edu’s suspension to facilitate an ongoing investigation prompted by the President. The investigation concerns the alleged payment of N585.189 million intended for vulnerable groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun, and Lagos states into a private account.
The EFCC emphasized the necessity of Edu’s suspension to ensure a thorough investigation. An official invitation has been sent to Edu, and the anti-graft agency expects her to honor the invitation promptly, providing insight into the matter at hand. The EFCC aims to carry out a comprehensive probe as directed by the President.
