In a decisive move demonstrating his unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in the administration of Nigeria’s resources, President Bola Tinubu has suspended the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, from office with immediate effect.

The President has directed the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to initiate a thorough investigation into all financial transactions related to the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, as well as any affiliated agencies.

Dr. Betta Edu, the suspended Minister, has been instructed to hand over her duties to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. Additionally, President Tinubu has called for her full cooperation with the investigating authorities as they conduct their inquiry.

In a bid to address the broader issues at hand, the President has formed a panel led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance. This panel is tasked with conducting a comprehensive diagnostic examination of the financial architecture and framework of the social investment programs. The objective is to implement conclusive reforms within the relevant institutions and programs. This initiative is designed to eliminate any institutional weaknesses, ensuring exclusive benefits for disadvantaged households and restoring lost public confidence in the social investment programs.

These directives, issued by President Tinubu, are effective immediately. Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, released this statement on January 8, 2024.
