The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has received seven new power transformers to enhance electricity supply to Lagos and boost its current wheeling capacity. The transformers, part of the ongoing TCN/World Bank power projects, have capacities ranging from 60MVA to 100MVA. The delivery was made to the Akangba 330/132kV transmission substation.

According to Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN, the transformers will be distributed to various transmission substations, including Alausa, Akoka, Maryland, Itire, and Amuwo. Each of these substations will receive one transformer, except for Akoko and Amuwo substations, which will each receive two transformers. Once installed, the transformers are expected to substantially increase TCN’s transmission capacity.

Nigeria faces a significant power supply deficit, with an average supply of around 4,000 MW for its population of 200 million citizens. The new transformers aim to contribute to addressing this deficit and improving the overall power supply in Lagos. The federal government estimates that Nigerians generate up to 40,000 MW through self-help means every day to meet their energy needs.
