Gunmen have reportedly killed three youths in a recent attack in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State. Former Governor Jonah Jang has strongly condemned these ongoing attacks and urged the need for state police as part of measures to address the prevailing insecurity in the state.
The victims, who had sought refuge in Bokkos town during a prior invasion of their community, were ambushed at Lut village while attempting to retrieve their loved ones. Kefas Mallai, Chairman of Community Peace Observers in Bokkos LG, confirmed the incident, expressing concern about the safety of the region.
In response to the escalating violence, Jang emphasized the urgency of establishing state police during a town hall meeting with traditional rulers, chairpersons of Local Governments, and political office holders. Jang stated, “The killings on the plateau would seem to have gone on unabated as the non-arrest and prosecution of perpetrators have bolstered the serial killers to carry out more and more killings.”
Jang’s call for state police is rooted in the belief that granting state governors the authority to deploy personnel swiftly would enhance security measures. He stressed, “More than ever, the time to heed the call for state policing is now.” Additionally, Jang called on the National Assembly to expedite actions to prevent further acts of violence.
While acknowledging the efforts of federal and state governments in responding to recent attacks, Jang urged additional measures to halt the relentless assaults, allowing villagers to reside in their homes without fear. He extended condolences to families affected by the attacks, expressing solidarity with the people of Plateau State in the face of these challenges.
