The Cross River State Government in Nigeria has signed a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with Oando Clean Energy Limited (OCEL) to develop a 100MW wind power generating plant in Akamkpa Local Council.
The initiative also includes the establishment of an Electric Vehicle (EV) assembly plant and the rollout of electric buses for mass transportation within the state.
The project aims to increase access to electric power, reduce carbon emissions, and contribute to environmental protection and climate change mitigation. The EV assembly plant is expected to create job opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the region.
The governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, highlighted the state’s commitment to implementing resolutions and commitments made at COP28, transforming the region into Nigeria’s “Eco-Capital.” The state is leveraging its abundant wind speeds for the establishment of wind farms and power plants, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable development.
The project is part of the state’s broader strategy to drive industrialization, economic growth, and environmental sustainability. The development of clean energy infrastructure and electric mobility facilities reflects a growing trend towards green and sustainable initiatives in various regions worldwide.
