Huawei, a global ICT infrastructure provider, has partnered with the Ministry of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy to introduce a scholarship programme named ‘Seeds for the Future.’ The initiative aims to invest more resources in the development of ICT talent in Nigeria. The announcement was made during the 2023-2024 Huawei ICT Competition National Final Award Ceremony in Abuja, attended by dignitaries including the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.
As part of the programme, Huawei presented awards to students from various tertiary institutions in Nigeria who demonstrated excellence in the Huawei ICT Competition. The competition is designed for students in Huawei ICT academies and higher education institutions interested in joining the global ICT Academy.
Chris Lu, the Managing Director of Huawei Nigeria, emphasized the significance of ICT in people’s lives and highlighted the Nigerian government’s substantial investment in the digital economy. Lu stated that over the past five years, Huawei has trained over 50,000 individuals, contributing to the ICT industry’s growth.
Lu further announced a strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to establish the ‘Seed for the Future Scholarship’ program. This scholarship initiative, starting this year, will award a total of 500,000 Naira in scholarships to 100 high-performing ICT students annually. Additionally, ten outstanding students will be selected for exchange and study opportunities in China each year.
The ‘Seeds for the Future Scholarship’ aims not only to provide financial assistance but also to symbolize recognition and encouragement for the dedication and hard work of ICT students in Nigeria, contributing to the development of the country’s ICT talent pool.
