Former petroleum minister Diezani Allison-Madueke, who sought refuge in the UK amid fears of the EFCC, has appealed to the Nigerian government for leniency. Currently in the second stage of cancer, Diezani implores President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to permit her return to Nigeria to confess to financial misconduct during her tenure. In a press statement after a medical visit in London, Diezani expressed her readiness to disclose details of alleged fund misappropriation while in office.
Diezani acknowledged the accusations of financial misconduct, stating, “I am now a born-again Christian and currently grappling with the second stage of cancer, for which my United Kingdom-based physician has advised me to continue medication for the rest of my life.” She tearfully added, “Yes, no one is flawless, but sometimes, God Almighty permits such occurrences.”
Highlighting her appeal for forgiveness, Diezani emphasized the transient nature of life and her desire to contribute positively upon return. She explicitly addressed President Tinubu and Nigerians, saying, “I would like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians to forgive me, allow me to return home, and contribute because life is transient.”
Diezani further disclosed her association with Dauda Lawal Dare, the current governor of Zamfara State, to whom she entrusted over $9 billion for safekeeping while he served as the Executive Director of First Bank Nigeria PLC. However, she lamented Mr. Dauda Lawal’s unresponsiveness, alleging collaboration with the UK police for potential fund claims after her demise.
In a detailed account, Diezani outlined her plea, intertwining her health struggles, allegations, and personal relationships. The former minister’s appeal adds a layer of complexity to her situation, urging consideration amidst the multifaceted challenges she faces.
