Senator Shehu Sani, the Human Rights Activist, Author, and Pan Africanist, has shared his thoughts on the land transportation waiver announced by the Federal Government of Nigeria for the Yuletide season, effective from December 21 to January 4. The initiative is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at alleviating the impact of subsidy removal.
Taking to his Twitter handle @ShehuSani, Senator Sani highlighted a crucial aspect of the free transportation initiative, stating, “Free transportation is not free; the Government has to pay the 50% cost from the public treasury. The transparency of the exercise is important too.”
Advocating for transparency in the implementation of this program, Senator Sani called on the Federal Government to collaborate with the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to provide accurate data on the number of passengers benefiting from the offer. This, he emphasized, would prevent the possibility of inflated figures and inflated reimbursement.
Senator Sani’s call for transparency underscores the importance of open communication and accountability in government initiatives, especially those directly impacting the public. By urging collaboration with the NURTW and the provision of accurate data, he emphasizes the need for clear and honest reporting to ensure that the intended benefits reach the deserving individuals and that public funds are utilized judiciously.
