The nomination of 11 Supreme Court judges by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to replace the vacancies on the bench of the highest court was expeditiously confirmed by the Senate in an astounding action. The confirmation came just 24 hours following the nomination notice and after the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters’ review and acceptance of a report during Thursday’s session.

President Tinubu had requested the Senate’s confirmation of the nominees, who were recommended by the National Judicial Council to fill the vacant positions resulting from the death and resignations of some justices.

The confirmed nominees include Justice Haruna Tsammani (Northeast), former chair of the Presidential Election Petition Court; Justice Moore Adumein (South-South); Justice Jummai Sankey (North-central); Justice Chidiebere Uwa (South-east); and Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme (South-east).

Others are Justice Obande Ogbuinya (South-East); Justice Stephen Adah (North-Central); Justice Habeeb Abiru (South-West); Justice Jamilu Tukur (Northwest); Justice Abubakar Umar (Northwest); and Justice Mohammed Idris (North-Central).

Senator Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno), the chairman of the committee, presented the panel’s report, affirming that the nominees possessed the necessary qualifications and experience for the positions, and no petitions were filed against them. He recommended their confirmation.
