The Chairman of the House Committee on Health and Chief Whip of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Hilary Ekpang Bisong JP, has advocated for sustained awareness and active participation in the State’s Health Insurance Scheme.
Hon. Bisong made this call during the 4th Quarter Stakeholders meeting of the Health Care Financing Equity and Investment Technical Working Group (TWG). He emphasized the importance of the Scheme in bringing healthcare closer to those in dire need, emphasizing its need to be people-centered. The House member further urged for a more sustainable public awareness and sensitization.
He highlighted, “Healthcare can be available, but accessibility may become a challenge.”
Providing additional information on government efforts in healthcare financing, the honorable member stated that the health sector budget increased from 3.5% in the previous administration to 13% in the current state budget. He encouraged implementing agencies to utilize the funds effectively, commending the Governor for the improved allocation for healthcare.
Dr. Egbe Ayuk, the Honorable Commissioner for Health, called on scheme operators to be transparent, assuring them of the government’s readiness to address challenges for seamless operations.
Representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO) emphasized the need for increased public trust in the Health Insurance.r
