Cooking Gas Prices Surge 5.82% in November – NBS Report Reveals

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a 5.82% increase in the average price of a 5kg cooking gas canister from N4,562.51 in October 2023 to N4,828.18 in November 2023. The year-on-year comparison also showed a rise of 6.13%, indicating a persistent upward trend in cooking gas costs.

The state profile analysis revealed that Benue, Jigawa, and Adamawa recorded the highest average prices, while Anambra, Imo, and Abia had the lowest. Additionally, the North-Eastern region had the highest average retail price for 5kg cooking gas, while the South-East recorded the lowest.

The NBS further disclosed that the average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cooking gas canister increased by 5.78% on a month-on-month basis, rising from N10,545.87 in October 2023 to N11,155.15 in November 2023. On a year-on-year basis, this represented a 9.57% surge.

Delta, Kogi, and Cross River recorded the highest average retail prices for the 12.5kg cooking gas, while Zamfara, Gombe, and Imo had the lowest. The South-South region had the highest average retail price for 12.5kg cooking gas, with the South-East recording the lowest.

In a related report, the NBS revealed that the average retail price per litre of kerosene decreased by 1.23% on a month-on-month basis, reaching N1,289.10 in November 2023. However, on a year-on-year basis, the price rose by 18.78%.

Adamawa, Imo, and Abuja recorded the highest average prices for kerosene per litre, while Kwara, Osun, and Zamfara had the lowest. The South-East had the highest average retail price per litre, with the North-West recording the lowest.

The average retail price per gallon of kerosene paid by consumers in November 2023 was N4,583.44, indicating a slight 0.03% increase from October. On a year-on-year basis, the price per gallon increased by 27.51%.

Kano, Ekiti, and Lagos recorded the highest average retail prices per gallon of kerosene, while Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Jigawa had the lowest. The North-East had the highest average price per gallon, with the South-South recording the lowest.
