Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), emphasized the crucial role of research in internal security for economic growth during his keynote speech at the 2023 summit of the Education Writers Association of Nigeria (EWAN) in Ikeja, Lagos.

Speaking on the theme, “Research for national development: Nigeria’s internal security in focus,” Prof. Ogundipe highlighted the detrimental impact of internal insecurity on economic growth, social cohesion, unity, infrastructural development, and human capital development. He underscored the need for research, science, and innovation to play pivotal roles in enhancing internal security.

He suggested employing advanced technologies such as drones and CCTV cameras for analysis, intelligence gathering, and monitoring situations. Prof. Ogundipe also advocated for the establishment of cybersecurity centers in universities to address cyber threats effectively.

In a related discussion, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, SAN, emphasized the importance of scholars and researchers engaging in productive collaborations to solve the nation’s challenges. He discouraged the notion of technology transfer and urged the government and corporate sector to provide necessary support to universities for impactful research.

The summit, organized by EWAN, addressed various topics related to national development and internal security, including financial security and the future of banking, as well as the nexus between food security, health safety, and environmental sustainability.

In their messages, stakeholders like Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, and representatives from the Ministry of Education and the Nigeria Labour Congress emphasized the collective responsibility for security and commended EWAN for proactive discussions and solutions.

The summit featured sessions with experts from different sectors, fostering collaboration and discussions on critical issues affecting Nigeria’s development and internal security.
