President Bola Tinubu has taken a significant step to ease travel for Nigerians during the festive season by approving a 50% reduction in interstate transport fares from December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024. Additionally, all train services will be available to commuters at no cost during this period. The announcement was made by Mr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, at the Aso Rock Villa.
This special initiative aims to facilitate affordable and accessible transportation for Nigerians during the holiday season. Alake emphasized that the Federal Government, in collaboration with transport unions and the Nigerian Railway Corporation, is committed to ensuring the seamless implementation of this presidential directive. He confirmed that stakeholders in the transportation sector have been consulted, and all necessary arrangements are in place to execute the plan effectively.
However, it’s worth noting that air travel is not part of this initiative, with Alake explaining that the focus is primarily on making transportation affordable for the masses who predominantly rely on road and rail services. By prioritizing affordability and accessibility, the government aims to enhance the travel experience for Nigerians and alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with holiday travel.
