The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is facing increased scrutiny as Nigerians express growing concerns about the widespread availability of counterfeit products in the country’s markets. Over the past 48 hours, individuals on the X platform have shared their experiences with fake products, prompting a nationwide discussion on the efficacy of NAFDAC’s regulatory measures.
The alarm was first raised by prominent social media user Somto Okonkwo, who warned Nigerians about the circulation of fake rice in the market, particularly in the festive season. His post on the X platform urged consumers to be vigilant and prioritize their safety.
Public analyst Japheth Omajuwa added to the conversation, highlighting a disturbing trend where lives are being endangered by substandard and fake products. Omajuwa pointed out that there are more incentives to break the law in Nigeria, and the system appears to penalize those who adhere to regulations.
Drawing attention to a recent incident, Omajuwa narrated the case of a man caught red-handed cooking meth in the heart of Lagos. Despite being convicted, the individual received a relatively lenient N4 million fine, creating a precedent that may encourage further illegal activities. Omajuwa emphasized the urgent need for a system that deters criminals and prioritizes the safety of the public.
The concerns raised by Nigerians on the X platform echo recent actions taken by NAFDAC. On Monday, the agency’s operatives disrupted a syndicate specializing in producing counterfeit wines, soft drinks, and other consumables in Eziukwu Market, Aba, Abia State. Additionally, just a week ago, NAFDAC apprehended a cartel dealing in fake products at Aba Cemetery Market.
