The alarming number of Nigerian university lecturers sponsored abroad by TETFund who have absconded is a cause for concern, according to Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund. Echono announced that TETFund plans to make these lecturers repay the funds spent on them or face repatriation.
Speaking at the TETFund Management Retreat in Makurdi, he explained that the fund is implementing both soft and hard measures to sanction those who have absconded. The soft approach involves requiring lecturers to refund the training expenses, while the hard measure includes collaboration with embassies and institutions to track and repatriate the absconders.
Echono emphasized the need to address this issue, revealing that even security agencies are showing interest in the matter. In addition, he shared that TETFund has disbursed over N400 billion to tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
