Engr Michael Oluwagbemi, the Programme Director of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGI), has given a firm assurance to Nigerians regarding the widespread availability of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) throughout the country. Addressing the public on Tuesday, the 19th, during a seminar titled “NIGERIA’S CNG REVOLUTION: SEIZING SUSTAINABLE OPPORTUNITIES” held at Transcorp Hotels in Abuja, he detailed a robust roadmap for the initiative’s success.
Oluwagbemi highlighted the strategic plan in place, emphasizing the P-CNGI’s commitment to providing sustainable energy solutions, particularly at the grassroots level. The programme aims to establish 23 compressing stations nationwide, with a target of 37 CNG daughter stations, ultimately achieving a network of 2,322 CNG stations across Nigeria by the year 2027.
The Programme Director outlined key aspects of the initiative, including an initial pilot supply of 55,000 CNG conversion kits for vehicles at discounted rates, designed to encourage domestic usage. Plans for the development of auto gas workshops and the training of technicians are underway to ensure a seamless transition. The initiative also focuses on regulatory measures, safety standards, and incentives for private partnerships to broaden its reach.
To strengthen the value chain, the P-CNGI is collaborating with upstream, mainstream, and downstream entities to secure a consistent gas supply. Oluwagbemi affirmed the initiative’s commitment to integration, ensuring the availability of CNG at the grassroots level.
During a panel discussion, Baruwa, the President of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), expressed the union’s support for the P-CNGI and pledged to educate Nigerians about the initiative, guiding them on when and where to convert vehicles and refill their CNG tanks.
Prince Segun Obayendo, the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria boss, stressed the importance of adequate regulation for conversion kits, well-trained technicians, retrofitters, and comprehensive training for station operators to ensure the success and sustainability of the CNG initiative. The collaboration between the P-CNGI and key stakeholders reflects a concerted effort to revolutionize Nigeria’s energy landscape with a focus on accessibility and sustainability.
