Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub, has been ranked as the second city on the list of sinking cities that may vanish by 2100.
The World Economic Forum, as per World of Statistics, identifies Jakarta, Indonesia, as the top city sinking at a rate of 6.7 inches per year due to excessive groundwater pumping.
Lagos is experiencing a sinking rate of 0.3 inches per year, coupled with the looming threat of coastal erosion.
Houston, Texas, in the United States, follows closely, sinking at a rate of 0.2 inches per year, with the added vulnerability to hurricanes.
The top three sinking cities, Jakarta, Lagos, and Houston, are accompanied by others on the list: Dhaka, Bangladesh, Venice, Italy, Virginia Beach, Virginia, Bangkok, Thailand, New Orleans, Louisiana, Rotterdam, Netherlands, Alexandria, Egypt.
Miami, Florida, secures the 11th spot on the list.
