Despite a 1-1 draw against Zrinjski Mostar at the Stadion Bijeli Brijeg, Nicolo Zaniolo’s 61st-minute goal and Matija Malekinusic’s late equalizer, the Villans finished one point ahead of second-placed Legia Warszawa.
Emery, 52, commended his team for achieving the primary objective of leading the group. He stated, “We are happy because our objective was to be first in the group. And with this draw, we are.” Emery strategically utilized players who haven’t seen regular playtime due to injuries, including Jacob Ramsey, Alex Moreno, Leander Dendoncker, Filip Marschall, and Tommi O’Reilly.
Emphasizing the importance of the match for building confidence and providing playing time, Emery remarked, “It’s important for them to get confidence and minutes. Tonight was perfect with the draw and result and perfect to give some of the players chances.”
