In a convocation lecture titled “Learning, Unlearning, and Relearning – Prerequisites of the Digital Age” at Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is-haq Oloyede, highlighted the shift in the job landscape of the Information Age. He emphasized that traditional university degrees alone will no longer guarantee employment in today’s dynamic era, where skills take precedence.
Professor Oloyede urged Nigerians to embrace the challenges of the Information Age by adopting a mindset of lifelong learning and a readiness to adapt to evolving circumstances. In his lecture, he underscored the importance of practical application in learning, stating that learning is ineffective without practice. He further stressed that the ability to acquire new skills, knowledge, and perspectives quickly and effectively, known as relearning, is crucial in navigating the complexities of the digital era.
“The imperative of learning, relearning, and unlearning cannot be overemphasized as the tonic that gives vitality to successful living in today’s Information Age. Those who can learn, relearn, and unlearn are the successful ones, and those without the mindset that accommodates the triad are bound to perpetually lament,” remarked Professor Oloyede.
Highlighting the rapid evolution of the Information Age driven by technological advancements, he pointed out that this transformation brings both new opportunities and threats. Traditional jobs such as typists, receptionists, telephone booth operators, computer operators, and others are facing extinction, while new opportunities emerge in the field of Information Technology.
