Newcastle United’s manager, Eddie Howe, expressed disappointment after AC Milan eliminated his team from Europe with a late victory, dashing their hopes of reaching the Europa League play-offs. The Magpies needed only a draw to secure a spot but finished at the bottom of Group F after Samuel Chukwueze’s late goal.
Despite the setback, Howe insisted that he would not deviate from the attacking style of play that characterizes Newcastle. He emphasized the team’s intention to qualify for the Champions League, acknowledging the players’ determination during the match.
“We will always try and be proactive instead of reactive. I would like to think that is the Newcastle way, and that’s how we have to be now and in the future,” said Howe.
Reflecting on their return to Europe after a 20-year absence, Howe acknowledged the challenging draw in the ‘group of death’ but commended his players for their effort. Despite the disappointment, he encouraged the team to focus on the positives and learn from the experience.
“I said to the players after that we can’t regret the effort we have given. Physically they have given so much to every game, so there is no part of me that thinks they haven’t been committed,” he added.
