Wike’s Grip Weakens: 27 Lawmakers Defect, Sparks Call for Urgent Political Overhaul

Former National Publicity Secretary of NPDP, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, recently commented on the defection of 27 lawmakers loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike. The move, according to Eze, signals a weakening of Wike’s political influence and potential repercussions for the lawmakers.

Eze expressed concern that the lawmakers appeared to be functioning like mere extensions of Wike’s directives, potentially risking their seats due to a disconnect with their constituents’ aspirations. He criticized Wike’s leadership style, describing it as lacking character and potentially detrimental to his political standing.

Welcoming the lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Eze highlighted the irony of Wike’s previous characterization of the APC as suffering from stage four cancer, suggesting that the party is on the brink of collapse.

Recognizing the urgency, Eze called for the National Assembly’s intervention to take over the functions of the Rivers State legislature. This, he argued, is crucial to prevent economic and political setbacks, particularly in the context of presenting and passing the 2024 budget.

In addition, Eze advised Governor Siminalayi Fubara to adopt a more assertive approach by dissolving the local government councils and the state executive council. Such a move, according to Eze, would enable the governor to reappoint individuals aligned with his vision, thereby dismantling Wike’s political influence.

He cautioned that failing to seize this opportunity could have significant repercussions for Governor Fubara, emphasizing the need for decisive action in the interest of the state and his administration.

Eze concluded by emphasizing the commitment of those who built the APC and their determination not to let Wike and his associates destroy the party, irrespective of the challenges they may face.
