Students and alumni of BAZE University in Abuja are fervently appealing to the school administration for an immediate resolution as the institution grapples with a suspension imposed by the Council of Legal Education. The suspension stems from the university consistently surpassing the authorized quota, enrolling over 750 students in its law faculty since 2017, exceeding the allotted 50 students per academic session recommended by the Datti Baba-Ahmed University, a quota usually filled in a 15-year period.
The news of the suspension has sparked anxiety among the student body, with many expressing their concerns about the potential repercussions on the university’s legal education program.
Vanessa Adeh, a 2022 law faculty graduate awaiting admission to law school, voiced her frustration, stating, “I hope they quickly address the flaws, but I already feel regret. It truly breaks my heart that I attended a private university to avoid hearing stories like these, but regrettably, I am now dealing with what I had hoped to avoid.”
Adeh’s sentiments were echoed by her classmates, who questioned why the administration allowed the situation to escalate to the point of a suspension.
Hadiza Umar, a current law student at BAZE University, expressed her worry about the potential impact on her and fellow students. She urged the administration to address the issues promptly before they worsen.
An anonymous student raised concerns about the lack of information from the university administration regarding the steps being taken to resolve the problem. She appealed for transparency to ease the fears of alumni and students affected by the incident.
Usman Aliyu, an alumnus of the law faculty, pleaded with the school administration to release specific details on the actions being taken to rectify the issue.
The Nigerian Law School, in a statement, revealed that 347 law graduates from BAZE University are awaiting admission, according to their investigations. The statement also highlighted that BAZE offers a 3-year law degree, shorter than the national benchmark curriculum’s five-year duration.
