Turkish football faces turmoil as referee Halil Umut Meler was physically assaulted by MKE Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca after a Super Lig match. The incident, which saw Meler punched to the ground and subsequently kicked by others, has prompted an indefinite suspension of all football activities in Turkey. The attack has garnered widespread condemnation, including from Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The disturbing incident unfolded after MKE Ankaragucu conceded a 97th-minute equalizer in a 1-1 draw with Caykur Rizespor. Faruk Koca ran onto the pitch, delivering a blow to referee Meler, who was protecting his head on the ground. The Turkish Football Federation swiftly condemned the assault as “inhumane and despicable,” expressing concern for Meler’s health and vowing to take severe actions against the perpetrators.
The federation’s statement highlighted the broader issue of irresponsible statements targeting referees by club presidents, managers, coaches, and TV commentators, creating an environment conducive to such violent acts. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against those responsible, and the Turkish Football Federation Board of Directors has postponed matches across all leagues indefinitely.
Referee Halil Umut Meler, a prominent figure in Turkish football, has officiated in three Champions League matches this season. Following the assault, he was promptly taken to the hospital, where the chief physician, Dr. Mehmet Yorubulut, assured that there is no immediate life threat. Meler suffered bleeding around his left eye and a small fracture.
Turkey’s President Erdogan condemned the attack, emphasizing that sports should embody peace and brotherhood, vehemently rejecting violence in Turkish sports. Ankaragucu issued an apology for the regrettable incident, expressing sadness and acknowledging the impact on the Turkish football community.
