The Police has confirmed the deaths of five people in a terrible occurrence at a nightclub in Oba, Anambra, including two local vigilance members, a bouncer, and two clubgoers. During the incident, the club’s owner was also kidnapped. Aderemi Adeoye, the State Commissioner of Police, offered his sorrow and promised to catch the offenders.
Commissioner Adeoye revealed that the police received a distress call around 2 a.m. on Monday, prompting the DPO Oba Division and local vigilance group members to rush to the scene. Unfortunately, the attackers had already fled. The police had been patrolling the area until midnight, and the incident occurred after the patrol team had moved to other parts of the state.
The victims included two local vigilance members, a bouncer, and two clubgoers. The owner of the club was abducted during the attack. Adeoye termed the incident as unfortunate and pledged to intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“We have seen a pattern; the gang was responsible for a similar incident where the victim’s body was dismembered about two weeks ago in Ihiala. We have an idea of the axis they are operating from; we are going to crack them down. No arrest has been made, and the investigation is ongoing,” Adeoye stated.
Highlighting the challenges in the area, Adeoye mentioned that Oba has been a flashpoint due to its thriving nightlife, numerous hotels, and strategic location. To address this, he announced plans to deploy additional assets and personnel to the region, especially during the festive season, to ensure the safety of the residents.
While expressing concern about the decay in societal values, Adeoye urged community and religious leaders to intensify campaigns against immorality, unnecessary displays of affluence, and criminal activities. He also emphasized the role of law enforcement in curbing crime and assured the public of continued efforts to maintain security.
The incident follows a similar attack in July, where Mr. Chidozie Nwangu, a native doctor known as ‘Akwa okuko tiwara aki,’ was kidnapped in his hotel room in Oba, resulting in the killing of two security guards.
