As inflation continues to surge and incomes decline, many households across Nigeria, especially those in the low-income bracket, are grappling with the challenge of affording daily necessities. A significant portion of their earnings, nearly 100%, is now dedicated to food expenses amid the relentless rise in prices, leaving families financially strained.
Recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed that Nigerians spent a staggering N61.08 trillion on food and household items in the first six months of 2023. The Nigeria Development Update (NDU) report indicated that approximately four million Nigerians slipped into poverty between January and May 2023 due to soaring inflation, which reached 27.3% as of the last consumer price index (CPI) reading in October.
The NBS reported that 89.8 million Nigerians were below the poverty line at the beginning of 2023, and an additional four million individuals were pushed into poverty by May, bringing the estimated total to 93.8 million. This represents about 43% of Nigeria’s 216 million population. Food inflation, exceeding 30%, has significantly impacted staple food prices. Notably, the cost of rice has surged by approximately 120% since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in May, with a 50kg bag jumping from N27,000 to N60,000 on average.
The upcoming yuletide season is exacerbating the situation, with a Guardian market survey indicating astronomical rises in general food prices. A basket of fresh tomatoes, previously below N20,000, now costs as much as N100,000, while a 50kg bag of beans is priced at N50,000.
Amid these challenges, the current N35,000 wage award for an average civil servant is proving insufficient to cover basic needs. Wale Kayode, a level eight civil servant and father of four, shared his struggle, revealing that his salary of N86,000 can no longer sustain his family. He has had to make difficult decisions, such as moving his kids from a private to a public school due to financial constraints.
Other individuals, including factory workers, small business owners, and low-income earners, echoed similar sentiments of financial strain, difficulty in affording healthy meals, and the impact on their overall standard of living.
Economic experts emphasize the urgent need for creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, leading to job creation and wealth generation. Strategies such as improving agricultural productivity, enhancing transportation systems, ensuring energy supply, and investing in infrastructure are crucial to addressing the root causes of inflation and economic hardship.
