Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Igbo apex socio-cultural body, has strongly criticized Chief Bode George for what they describe as “malicious” comments regarding the Igbo community in Lagos. In a statement released by its spokesman, Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, Ohanaeze Ndigbo expressed disappointment in Chief George, considering his status as a statesman.
The statement revealed that Chief George’s comments were in response to a World Press Conference held by the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Engr. Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. Chief Iwuanyanwu highlighted the historical significance of Lagos as the former capital of Nigeria, attracting a diverse population and fostering economic activities. Ohanaeze Ndigbo praised the Igbo community for their spirit of corporate social responsibility, contributing positively to the environments they inhabit.
Chief Iwuanyanwu specifically addressed the lawful acquisition of properties in Lagos, emphasizing that Igbo-owned properties were obtained through legal means.
The statement refuted Chief Bode George’s criticism, asserting that his unsolicited support for the policies of the Lagos State Government was both curious and misdirected. Ohanaeze Ndigbo questioned why an elder statesman would query the loyalty and commitment of an ethnic group to the development of a city.
