Lagos Warns Ikoyi Property Owners: ‘Fix Fences Now or Face Consequences!’

The Lagos State Government has issued a contravention notice to property owners along the Shoreline Estate, Onikoyi Estate, Park View, and Banana Island corridor, urging them to remove fences encroaching on drainage channels within seven days. The directive comes as part of efforts to ensure compliance with the standard three meters required by law for the setback of secondary collector drains.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the announcement during a press briefing after inspecting areas in Ikoyi, including the State House and Dodan Barracks. Wahab highlighted that many structures in the designated areas failed to adhere to the legally mandated three-meter setback for secondary collector drains.

Upon investigation, it was revealed that the first property in the Onikoyi/Banana Island collector, situated inside Onikoyi Estate, left only 2.5 meters for the drainage setback. The commissioner noted that, to achieve a balanced situation, the government would accept the 2.5-meter setback, albeit smaller than the 3 meters required by law.

Property owners and residents along the specified collector drain corridor have been given a seven-day notice to adjust their fences on both sides of the channel, ensuring a 2.5-meter drainage setback. Enforcement will commence immediately after the expiration of the mandatory notice.

Wahab advised property owners and residents to voluntarily comply with the directive before the enforcement begins. Failure to do so may result in property owners being surcharged for the expenses incurred by the government in enforcing the necessary adjustments.
