The ancient city of Ibadan in Oyo State finds itself in the throes of a sudden and perplexing crisis – the mysterious disappearance of naira notes, intensifying distress among its residents. DAILY POST’s investigation reveals that the shortage of naira notes has escalated to a critical level over the weekend, creating widespread consternation exacerbated by a significant number of malfunctioning ATMs across the city.

In a weekend investigative sweep, DAILY POST correspondents traversed various neighborhoods, including Iwo Road, Agodi Secretariat, Awolowo junction, Bodija, Sango, University of Ibadan, and Agodi Gate. Across these areas, a chorus of frustration echoed among residents grappling with the sudden scarcity of naira notes. The situation is compounded by a majority of ATMs either failing to dispense cash entirely or restricting withdrawals to a mere N5,000. Some ATMs have gone as far as limiting transactions exclusively to account holders of the respective banks.

Mrs. Ifeoluwa, a bank customer, expressed her dismay after futile attempts to withdraw cash from multiple banks. She highlighted the injustice of the situation, questioning why ATMs were not releasing money when individuals have funds in their accounts. Another resident, Kolade, expressed surprise at the untimely occurrence, urging government intervention to overhaul the banking sector and avert similar crises in the future.

As of the latest report on Monday, the dire situation persists, leaving residents to grapple with the challenges posed by the scarcity of naira notes and the malfunctioning ATMs. The ongoing crisis underscores the urgent need for attention and resolution to alleviate the inconvenience faced by the people of Ibadan.

The sudden and widespread disappearance of naira notes raises questions about the factors contributing to this unprecedented situation. It is imperative for relevant authorities to swiftly investigate and address the root causes, ensuring that the people of Ibadan regain access to essential financial services.
