Heartland FC emerged victorious against Bendel Insurance with a scoreline of 1-0 during the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 12 fixture at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, breaking an 11-game losing streak.
Concerns had been mounting over Heartland FC’s poor performance since their return from the Nigeria National League (NNL) to the country’s top-flight league, prompting the appointment of a new coach, Kennedy Boboye. Despite the initial setback of a 0-1 loss to arch-rival Enyimba FC at home, the team showed resilience by securing an away point against Shooting Stars before finally clinching a crucial three points against Bendel Insurance.
The decisive moment in the match arrived in the 51st minute when Austine Osayande capitalized on Divine Ukadike’s corner kick, slamming the ball into the net from close range. This pivotal goal not only secured the long-awaited victory but also injected a sense of hope and confidence into the team.
To avoid recurring setbacks of leading but failing to secure victories, Coach Boboye strategically introduced Ifeanyi Anyawu, Christian Weli, and Onyekachi Okafor in the 66th minute. This tactical move paid off as the trio played a crucial role in containing any potential comeback attempts by the opponents, addressing issues seen in previous matches against Bayelsa United (2-2 in matchday eight) and Sporting Lagos (1-1 in matchday nine).
Despite the return of Bendel Insurance’s Tamara Ezekiel and Paul Obata in the starting eleven, Heartland FC’s determined performance denied the visitors a chance to compound the host’s woes.
This much-needed victory propelled Heartland FC from 20th to 19th position on the league table. With five more matches remaining before the end of the first half of the season, the team has the opportunity to climb further up the standings.
