FCT Minister Tasks Committee to Elevate Local Governance in Inaugural Session

The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has called on the recently inaugurated House Committee on FCT Area Councils and Ancillary Matters to champion local governance initiatives in the nation’s capital.

Dr. Mahmoud made this appeal during the committee’s inauguration ceremony held at the National Assembly complex in Abuja. Emphasizing the committee’s pivotal role, she highlighted its responsibility in ensuring effective local governance, as well as the implementation of policies and development programs within the FCT communities.

In her address, Dr. Mahmoud stated, “The committee will play a crucial role in the administration, development, and coordination of activities in the FCT area councils. Its functions encompass overseeing local governance, facilitating infrastructure development, and addressing ancillary issues that impact the overall well-being of FCT residents.”

The minister assured the committee of the FCT Administration’s unwavering support in carrying out their constitutional oversight functions.

Chairing the committee, Mr. Agbedi Fred (PDP-Bayelsa) emphasized the importance of a collaborative relationship with the FCTA. He specifically highlighted key areas of focus, including tourism, revenue generation, rural infrastructure development, sports, chieftaincy affairs, and other pertinent matters.

“The committee is committed to legislating on policies that will expedite development across the six Area Councils of the FCT,” stated Mr. Fred.
