The Rivers State Police Command is dealing with the arrest of four of its own agents in connection with horrific crimes involving the kidnapping of a hotel staff in Port-Harcourt, the state capital. Olatunji Disu, the Commissioner of Police, made the somber statement during a press conference, giving light on the gravity of the issue that has sent shockwaves throughout the law enforcement community.
Commissioner Disu, displaying a commitment to transparency, addressed the media promptly after learning about the incident through social media channels. He assured the public, “We are not hiding anything,” underscoring the seriousness of the matter at hand. The four implicated officers are currently in custody, awaiting a formal complaint from the victim as investigations proceed.
The disturbing sequence of events unfolded when police officers on patrol intercepted Darlington Bieh in the Choba area of the Obio/Akpor region. Despite finding nothing incriminating during a search of Bieh’s belongings, the officers, discovering photos suggesting Bieh’s employment at a prominent hotel, took advantage of the situation. They proceeded to demand a substantial ransom from Bieh’s family, issuing threats of harm if their demands were not met.
Thinking on his feet, Bieh reached out to his boss, the hotel owner, who promptly informed a Divisional Police Officer (DPO). Displaying courage and resourcefulness, the DPO assumed the role of Bieh’s father during the negotiations, ultimately orchestrating the successful arrest of the rogue police officers.
This distressing incident raises serious concerns about the integrity of law enforcement and underscores the urgent need for robust measures to root out corruption within the ranks. While Commissioner Disu’s swift response is commendable and reflects a commitment to accountability, it also highlights the imperative for systemic reforms to prevent such egregious acts in the future.
