The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has gathered in Abuja for discussions on a living wage that reflects the current cost of living as preparations are made for negotiations between the Federal Government and organized labour on the new minimum wage.

Despite recent attacks on workers and their leaders in Imo State, the NLC remains resolute in its commitment to advocating for fair wages and maintaining the principles of freedom of association and collective bargaining, as outlined in the Nigerian Constitution and international labor conventions.

Mr. Joe Ajaero, in his welcome address at the Opening Session of the NLC 2023 Harmattan School, emphasized the determination of the Congress to overcome challenges and continue working towards achieving decent work and improving conditions in both formal and informal sectors.

The theme of the session, “Building Workers’ Skills for Policy Engagement,” reflects the NLC’s focus on enhancing the capabilities of workers to actively engage in policy discussions. Ajaero encouraged participants to approach the training with a hunger for knowledge, fostering a collaborative environment for sharing experiences and raising questions.

As the NLC navigates through adversities, including the recent attacks in Imo State, its commitment to advocating for workers’ rights and fair wages remains steadfast. The upcoming negotiations on the new minimum wage are a critical aspect of this commitment, and the NLC aims to contribute significantly to discussions on living wages that align with the current economic landscape.
