The Federal Government has announced intentions to adopt a new minimum wage regime beginning April 1, 2024. The statement, made by Idris Mohammed, Minister of Information and National Orientation, detailed the completion of the existing N30,000 minimum salary by the end of March 2024.
Minister Mohammed underscored that targeted palliatives would precede the new wage regime, aiming to alleviate economic challenges faced by workers during the transition. Recognizing the complexity of the wage issue, the Minister indicated the formation of a committee, inclusive of Labour representatives, to navigate and address the intricacies.
The ongoing discussions between the Federal Government and Labour are actively shaping the composition of the committee. Minister Mohammed assured the Nigerian workforce that the end of March would mark the commencement of a new wage structure come April.
This ambitious undertaking seeks to establish a comprehensive salary structure for workers nationwide. The Minister expressed expectations that the private sector and state governors would align with the proposed wage changes, fostering a more equitable compensation structure.
