Ethiopian Airlines has issued a prohibition on passengers carrying ‘Ghana-must-go’ bags on its flights originating from Nigeria. This restriction was formally communicated through a letter signed by Henok Gizachew, the airline’s Manager of Airport Services, and directed to the Regional Manager of the Federal Airports Authority Of Nigeria (FAAN).

The ‘Ghana-must-go’ bags, known for their widespread usage in Nigeria due to their durability and cost-effectiveness, are no longer permitted on Ethiopian Airlines flights starting from November 25, 2023, as stipulated in the letter dated November 23, 2024. The airline attributed the decision to significant financial losses incurred and damage to conveyor belt systems, affecting not only their flights but also causing issues for other foreign airlines.

Despite the ban, Ethiopian Airlines has accommodated passengers who still prefer ‘Ghana-Must-Go’ bags for packing their belongings. However, a crucial condition has been set: these bags must be well-packed in cartons with a hardcover of rectangular size. This measure is designed to address concerns about potential damages caused by the traditional sac-like load carriers.

This move by Ethiopian Airlines reflects a strategic decision to balance passenger preferences with operational considerations, aiming to enhance the overall travel experience while minimizing associated challenges for both the airline and its passengers.
