In a riveting legal drama that has captivated the public’s attention, Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, is ensnared in a complex web of bail conditions imposed by the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory. Despite being granted bail on November 22, Emefiele finds himself confined in Kuje Prison, grappling with challenges in meeting the stringent requirements set by Justice Hamza Muazu.
The substantial N300 million bail, granted nearly two weeks ago, mandates Emefiele to produce two sureties with landed properties in the prestigious Maitama District of Abuja. Though seemingly straightforward, these conditions have proven to be formidable obstacles, thwarting Emefiele’s release.
Justice Muazu, in a decisive ruling, ordered Emefiele to remain in prison custody until he fully satisfies all the stipulated bail conditions. The former CBN Governor, already in Kuje Prison on remand when the bail conditions were pronounced, has yet to navigate the intricacies of securing the required sureties.
During Tuesday’s court proceedings, Emefiele was escorted to the court premises by heavily armed security personnel from Kuje Prison, underscoring the gravity of the situation. The fortified surroundings, brimming with a strong presence of armed security agents, underscored the high-profile nature of the case.
Both the prosecution, led by Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and Emefiele’s defense, headed by Mathew Burkaa, SAN, acknowledge the hurdle lies in obtaining two sureties with landed properties in Maitama District—a task proving more challenging than anticipated.
While Mr. Oyedepo asserts that Emefiele remains in prison due to unmet bail conditions, Mr. Burkaa affirms that efforts are underway to fulfill these requirements. The legal teams are diligently navigating the complexities of securing sureties, a process that has extended Emefiele’s stay in Kuje Prison.
