The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled the ambitious Renewed Hope Shelter Programme, aiming to provide one million low-cost housing units for the vulnerable population within the next seven years. Mrs. Chidimma Makuachukwu, the National Programme Manager for Renewed Hope Shelter for the Poor, IDP, and Refugees, shared this plan during the Sixth Nigeria Affordable Housing Finance and Innovation Summit (NAHFIS Expo 2023) in Abuja.

Highlighting the collaborative nature of the initiative, Mrs. Makuachukwu emphasized that the Federal Government would work in partnership with state and local governments to secure lands for the construction of the low-cost housing units. The project is set to be expanded to all states in Nigeria by 2024.

“We are working with the state government in conjunction with the local authorities to get land; currently, we are in Benue. What we are doing is to resettle the IDPs back to their ancestral homes with the support of state and local authorities,” explained Mrs. Makuachukwu.

The approach involves leveraging local labor and content, empowering the economies of the local authorities involved. Importantly, the initiative focuses on vulnerable states across the Federation without a selection process.

This Renewed Hope Shelter Programme signifies a concerted effort by the government to address housing challenges for the most vulnerable segments of the population, marking a crucial step toward inclusive development and community empowerment.
